In an effort to reduce the ongoing costs of existing applications, many organizations are moving to the use of new hardware and operating systems environments. Environments such as Linux, UNIX, WinTel, J2EE and .Net are becoming more robust - faster processors, parallel failover mechanisms, and the increasing stability of J2EE and .NET. The new "free" open source technologies are showing the same improvements. It is clear that more applications can run in these new environments for much less cost.
The High Speed Approach to More Cost Efficient Platforms
The difficulty is how to get there. A complete re-write of current applications for these new environments is not acceptable - there is too much risk coupled with the possibility of functionality being lost. Package replacement might allow a new platform, but packages rarely provide the needed functionality.
